The Business of Being a Writer with Joanna Penn Episode #142

Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts Overcast

My guest today is Joanna Penn, New York Times bestselling thriller writer. She writes inspirational non-fiction for aspiring authors. We talk about the business of being a writer, her habits, and routines, how she shapes her environment to fuel her creative work and shortcutting the process to get into the flow.

I learned a lot from Joanna and appreciated her insights derived from her experience of leaving her day job to build a successful creative empire. She has excellent advice for self-publishing and marketing authors and compelling ideas, mindset shifts to make the work happen.

Joanna Penn’s best advice:

  • Joanna believes you must change your environment to be in a place that you can consistently produce creative work. For her that is a local coffee shop from 7 am to 10 am, wearing her noise canceling headphones while listening to the sounds of thunderstorms.
  • Great titles Joanna recommends:
    • Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield
    • Stealing Fire by Kotler & Wheel
    • Rise of Superman: Decoding the Science of Ultimate Human Potential by Steven Kotler
    • Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker PHD
